Call for entry: Student Design Competition for Commemorative Ceramic Gift

The WWU Department of Art & Art History, along with the Office of the President, invite students to submit designs for a commemorative ceramic object, to be given by President Randhawa and first lady, Uzma Ahmad Randhawa, as a gift of friendship and welcome to visiting dignitaries.  Following the spirit of President Randhawa’s 2017 Convocation address, students are encouraged to consider the distinctive characteristics that represent WWU.

As a tightly knit campus community that cares deeply about our most vulnerable members, we are committed to equity, inclusion, and affirming the fundamental dignity and respect that people of all identities deserve.

-President Sabah Randhawa

Who can enter

Students in the Department of Art & Art History, Design, Industrial Design and Fairhaven College are encouraged to apply; however, applications are welcome from all currently enrolled WWU students.

Jury Process

The Jurors will include:

  • Uzma Ahmad Randhawa, WWU first lady
  • Ryan Kelly, Assistant Professor of Ceramics and Foundations
  • Art & Art History faculty

The first-round applications will be reviewed for the following criteria:

  • Overall aesthetic quality
  • Individual expression and interpretation of the theme
  • Feasibility of production

The jury will select three finalists to work with Ceramics Faculty to refine designs and produce ceramic prototypes.

The final selection will be made from those prototypes.

The Winning Design

The student designer will be awarded $500.00, and their design will be produced in a limited edition through the WWU Art & Art History’s Ceramics program.  These will be provided to the Office of the WWU President to give as mementos to visiting dignitaries.

Submission Process

Design proposals must be formatted as a single PDF, and submitted online via the proposal submission form.

First-round applications due: EXTENDED! Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Proposals must include the following:

  • A brief written statement of 200 words or less.
  • Two-dimensional sketches or renderings of the design showing a Top View, Side View and relevant Detail Views.

Design Physical Requirements

  • Size: The object should not exceed twelve inches in its largest dimension.
  • Weight: The object should not exceed 3 Lbs.
  • Color: Due to limitations of the materials available for fabrication, not all colors can be replicated in ceramic form.
    • The Ceramics faculty will work with the three finalists to interpret their designs into ceramic materials.
    • Preference will be given to monochromatic or two-color designs.
    • Multi-color designs are welcome, but may be rejected due to fabrication limitations.

Submissions may take the form of a functional object such as a plate or vessel, or a sculptural object.  In both cases the design will be evaluated for its feasibility of production in the WWU Ceramics Program.
