General Audition Information

Music Course Enrollment

Students must pass an entrance audition before enrolling in core music classes. These include music theory, aural skills, class piano/keyboarding, and music history. Students who miss primary auditions are heard on a space-available basis. Access to restricted courses is not guaranteed until the student is accepted through audition. Students may still participate in all ensembles.

General Admissions vs. Music Acceptance

Acceptance to the Music Department does not guarantee admission to the university. Apply to the university as well for general admission. You may audition regardless of your university application status. Music major or minor consideration does not require a separate application. We will contact the email provided in the music audition form.

Timeline of Results

Students will receive an official audition decision form via email. It will be sent to the email supplied on the audition request form, from the Program Coordinator, Lee Anne Frahn. Audition results vary by audition area. Results depend on the number of auditions, competition, and overall studio availability.

Composition Requirements

Prospective composition majors must also submit a portfolio of previous work for faculty review. The portfolio should consist of notated scores and any recordings, live or midi. Non-local students may submit their scores and recordings online. Contact Dr. Bruce Hamilton to schedule an interview for the same day of your entrance audition. Prospective students will be notified of their acceptance into the composition program once they are accepted into the Department of Music, based on instrumental or vocal audition.
