Please join the combined Western Washington University Orchestras for an evening exploring many angles of romance (both with a capital and lowercase “R”!) in music. The WWU String Sinfonia, under the leadership of James Ray, opens the program with the final installment of the orchestra’s multi-year cycle of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s four Novelletten for strings: the wistful first Novelette in A Major. This will be followed by the Richard Rodgers American songbook classic, My Funny Valentine, arranged for orchestra by Calvin Custer.
Closing the program, the Sinfonia will join forces with the Western Symphony Orchestra to perform one of the great American symphonic masterworks: the stirring, cinematic Second Symphony of Howard Hanson, nicknamed the “Romantic.” Famous for its appearance in the final minutes of Ridley Scott’s Alien, the vivid language of this iconic work can be found echoed—and directly quoted—in countless Hollywood scores. Don’t miss this chance to hear it live performed by an orchestra of 100 musicians!
