"A Hand of Bridge" by Samuel Barber
"The Telephone" by Gian Carlo Menotti
"Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters" by Ned Rorem
Heather Dudenbostel, Director
Mark Davies, Music Director
Award-winning WWU Opera offers a vibrant presentation of three American one-act operas tied together by the thread of family.
The story begins in the 1950s with Samuel Barber’s "A Hand of Bridge" opening a window into the complicated inner thoughts of two couples as they play the iconic card game.
Set a generation later is Gian Carlo Menotti’s "The Telephone" - revealing young lover Ben creatively navigating around his intended fiancé Lucy’s preoccupation with chatting on the telephone.
Finally, Ned Rorem’s "Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters" with a libretto by Gertrude Stein invites the audience into the imaginary world of five children playing a surreal yet humorous game of murder before bedtime.
