Program

WWU music faculty members Grant Donnellan (violin), Eric Kean (viola) and Jeffrey Gilliam (piano) will be joined by visiting guests artists Hal Grossman (violin) and Meredith Blecha-Wells (cello) to present chamber music of Beethoven and Brahms.  The program will begin with Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 74, "The Harp," which was named for the characteristic pizzicato that alternates between string players in the first movement of the work. The second half of the program showcases Brahms’ Piano Quartet, No.1 in G minor, Op. 25.  Brahms’ work features the celebrated ‘gypsy finale,’ inspired by Hungarian Gypsy music. Here, Brahms uses strumming effects that recall the cimbalom, a contemporary plucked instrument, popular in bands that played music from eastern Europe.
