Installed in the main space of Western Gallery, AFJD public furniture is a blend of mushroom spores and sawdust which are grown in moulds to produce sustainable materials called mycelium biocomposites. The honeycomb design reflects a fabrication process in which individually moulded hexagonal blocks are grown together to produce larger forms.

This mushroom furniture suggests a future in which biodegradable architectural components are grown rather than manufactured. A discussion about the project will be led by Joe Dahmen (Masters of Architecture, MIT), Assistant Professor at UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, who worked with his partner, Amber Frid-Jimenez, Canada Research Chair in Design and Technology at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.

PRIMARY RESEARCH LAB will host a series of engagement labs where we will create active platforms for encountering works of minimalism from the collections at WWU. These labs will highlight the physicality of these encounters. Through commissioned works, events, tours, listening sessions and screenings the lab series will contribute a contemporary and sensory perspective on these artists forms.
