Serena Barrett is a junior at Western Washington University majoring in Piano Performance under the instruction of Professor Jeffrey Gilliam. Serena grew up in Seattle, Washington, where she began taking piano lessons at age five. While enjoying her classical piano studies, she discovered a love of jazz music in high school, as well as a passion for salsa music in community college. Alongside her work as a classical accompanist and as a musical theatre pianist, Serena has also played in several jazz groups, including Edmonds College’s jazz and salsa band, as well as their vocal jazz group Soundsation. In her first year at Western, she played piano for Western Vocal Jazz. This love of many genres is reflected in her recital’s program featuring both classical and jazz works. During her time at Western, Serena has gratefully accepted the William Sanford Piano Scholarship, the Ford Hill Piano Scholarship, and the Don C. Walter Memorial Scholarship. Serena is looking forward to another wonderful year of making music at Western.
