Winter Dances 2019

Production Dates

This evening of original student choreography is an annual event that is part of the Bachelor’s of Fine Art (“BFA”) dance program. Students in the Dance major study the creation of time-based art for the proscenium stage - as choreographers, dancers, and lighting designers. The students also fill roles behind-the-scenes as stage managers, costume and lighting designers and master electricians.

I came into the first day of rehearsal knowing I wanted my piece to be based off a personal experience of stargazing in the beautiful country side of Leeds, New York. The dancers and I discussed moments of feeling very small looking up at the stars above and the sky seeming so expansive. We discovered movement based off words, poems and dissecting movement apart. The piece took a turn when we went to the WWU planetarium and experienced the patterns and intensities that lie beyond what the eye can see. Patterns in the bodies of stars are represented by the fleeting moments created by the bodies of the dancers.
