The WWU Symphony Orchestra opens its 2017-2018 concert season with an international program of music, including the world premiere of a new piano concerto by Patrick Harlin in celebration of pianist Jeffrey Gilliam’s 25th year on the faculty. A Western alumnus, Harlin’s music has been performed by the St. Louis Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Alarm Will Sound, Rochester Philharmonic, Calidore String Quartet, and Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, among many others. Bookending the program are the frenetic Danzón No. 2 by Mexican composer Arturo Marquez and the magisterial Symphony No. 103 by the Classical master Joseph Haydn.
