Along with weekly lessons and departmental masterclass, students have the opportunity to perform full leading roles in our main stage Operas, and participate in Opera Scenes, Aria Competition, our concert series Liederabend, main stage theater plays and musicals, as well be a part of our outstanding choral ensembles. There are performing opportunities for everyone--music majors and non-majors alike--in Western's choral program in both auditioned and non-auditioned choirs and in WWU's opera program. Singers in the choral program are also encouraged to study privately with our world class voice faculty, increasing vocal skills to complement their musical knowledge and performance experience.
The voice area regularly invites internationally renowned performers and coaches for masterclasses and private coaching’s. Some visiting artists have included William Bolcom, Joan Morris, Nuccia Focile, Quinn Kelsey, Heidi Grant Murphy, Gran Wilson, Dean Williamson, Gary Thor Wedow and Robert McPherson.
Numerous vocal program alumni have gone on to successful performance careers in opera and musical theater, while others have become accomplished private studio instructors, music teachers, and conductors. Our alumni have attended graduate school at Indiana State University, Manhattan School of Music, Rice University, Northwestern, University of Michigan, University of British Columbia, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and many more.
