Spotlight on WWU Dance Alum Laura Bartczak (BFA Dance, '09)
Intern with the Trisha Brown Dance Company 2010-2013

My experience as a dance major at WWU paved the way for my life as a movement based artist in Brooklyn, NY. After receiving my BFA in Modern Dance Performance and Choreography in 2009 I moved to NYC and immersed myself in the dance and visual art world. With connections made at Western Washington University through the visiting artist program with the Trisha Brown Dance Company, doors were opened for me to perform, present work, deepen my somatic practices, and work closely with my most influential choreographers. Aside from performing and teaching, I am exploring the dance-for-the-camera and filmmaking medium, which has provided me the opportunity to apply my choreographic inclination onto film, and to present work at several galleries and venues throughout the city. Most notably, my work as a dancer and filmmaker has been presented by Movement Research at Judson Church, Gina Gibney Dance, Center for Performance Research, Mono No Aware, AUNTS, Pioneer Works, CATCH, Dance Film Association, and Performatica in Mexico. The WWU dance program was an amazing gateway into the vast world of movement, film, and somatic studies. I am grateful to my mentors for their guidance, experience, and open minds. The professors granted me space to create and provided a solid foundation for me to expand upon.
