The Northwest Classical Guitar Society presents guitarist Paul Grove in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19 at Bellingham Public Library (Fairhaven Branch on 12th street) as part of a weeklong residency. Admission to the concert is $10 at the door.

Grove’s program this season features WWU Music Department professor David Feingold’s “Song and Dance for Solo Guitar.” This single movement work borrows from influences including Franz Schubert (song); and Igor Stravinsky (dance). “The craziness that ties the two is from Pablo Picasso,” says the composer.

Currently, Grove teaches 18th-century counterpoint at Gonzaga University, where he also teaches Classical Guitar, and is teaching ethno-musicology and guitar at Whitworth University. During his weeklong residency, he will be teaching classes to WWU guitar students who study with Professor Feingold.

Grove holds degrees from Peabody Conservatory (where he studied with the late Aaron Searer), and from the University of Arizona.  He has received awards and distinctions in several national and international guitar competitions, including the Guitar Foundation of America Competition, the Stotsenberg International Competition, The Great Lakes Guitar Competition, and the Norman Sholin Memorial Competition.

As a teacher he has mentored students who have received distinctions in several competitions including Guitar Northwest, the Wolff and Shaeffer Competitions at the University of Arizona, and Musicfest Northwest.

As a performer, Grove has been a featured soloist with the Spokane Symphony, the Couer d’Alene Symphony, the Gonzaga Symphony, the Northwest Bach Festival, the Northwest Sacred Music Chorale, and other regional ensembles.  He has toured throughout the United States, and has performed internationally in Russia, Brazil, India, and Canada.
