Fresh Snow
Join Gerda on a harrowing journey in a wildly original adaptation of the beloved Hans Christian Andersen tale. When her best friend Kay is taken by the Snow Queen to a world of numbing ice and snow, Gerda embarks on an unforgettable adventure through singing flowers, leaping reindeer, and unbreakable riddles in this fresh take on the same classic tale that inspired Disney’s "Frozen."
Will Gerda’s love and grief save her best friend Kay before he is trapped forever in the Snow Queen’s palace? SCT's "The Snow Queen" is a courageous and whimsical tale of deep human connection and belonging.
Seattle Children's Theatre collaborated with its local and regional partners The National Nordic Museum and Western Washington University's Department of Theatre and Dance to ready "The Snow Queen" for its West Coast Premiere.
The Snow Queen was initially developed as part of New Victory LabWorks at the New Victory Theatre in New York City, where it was produced by Blessed Unrest under the direction of Jessica Burr.
The Snow Queen was further developed in The Test Kitchen, Seattle Children’s Theatre’s partnership with Western Washington University’s Theatre Department, under the direction of Johamy Morales.
Ongoing Collaboration: Test Kitchen 2025
In the summer of 2024, a collaboration between WWU and SCT called "Test Kitchen" developed "Dr. Desoto" and "American Prom." "Dr. Desoto" was a co-production between SCT and the Alliance Theatre in Atalanta, Georgia. "American Prom" will tour to Washington state high schools in the spring of 2025 under the direction of faculty member Evan Mueller, who will also perform a role in the play.
Following the success of Dr. Desoto, Test Kitchen 2025 will be developing four new plays. Pulitzer Prize winner Doug Wright joins Test Kitchen 2025 as a guest playwright. Wright scripted the movies "Quills" and "The Burial," and wrote last year’s Broadway play "Good Night Oscar." He has three plays slated for Broadway in the 2025 season.
