WWU Theatre collaborates with Seattle Children's Theatre in Summer Test Kitchen

In the summer of 2024, Western's Department of Theatre and Dance will once again partner with Seattle Children's Theatre to create a live theatre workshop they're calling "Summer Test Kitchen."
Theatre professionals, students, and faculty members will work together to develop two pieces by SCT's Artistic Director Idris Goodwin.
They will workshop the development of this new, stage adaptation of William Steig's classic picture book for kids, "Doctor De Soto." The play is not written yet, so "our work will be to assist the playwright in their work to generate a first full-draft," says Theatre and Dance Chair Rich Brown.
The development workshop for "Dr. DeSoto" culminates with an “in progress” staged reading, open to the public, on July 19. The piece will premiere on SCT’s mainstage in spring 2025.
The company will then develop an existing play, "American Prom," by Idris Goodwin, into a shorter slated to tour high schools in Washington state. The goal of the Summer Test Kitchen workshop is to develop a final draft for touring. The "American Prom" development workshop also concludes with an “in progress” reading, open to the public, on July 24.
