Summer Dance Company Residency with Alvin Ailey's Briana Reed

a sabel background frames a black female dancer in a form fitting bodice flinging her head and arms back so far they reach toward the floor. Her leg extends from the floating pinwheel of voluminous white fabric comprising her skirt.

WWU Dance is bringing in internationally known artist Briana Reed to set a new piece on our students. We hope you will be able to participate in this residency.

Call for dancers to be in an original contemporary/modern piece choreographed by Briana - a former soloist with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Dancers will work with Briana Reed to create a new piece to be performed at the end of the residency and possible additional summer performances based on cast schedules. The piece will be remounted for Winter Dances 2023.

Briana shares this quote as her ideation for the new piece:

“Social justice… whenever that term is used, I think of the fact that human beings whether they are Black or White feel within themselves that there is the possibility and potential for some kind of happiness and humanness in their lives before they leave this planet called earth and that social justice has to emanate from a government that really believes in human beings, the preservation and conservation of human beings while they are yet alive.” ~Shirley Chisholm

Rehearsals are tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; and 1 to 4 p.m. There will be an informal showing of the piece on June 18 or 19, time to be announced.

Based on cast schedules we will perform this piece at festivals during the summer, and restage it for Winter Dances 2023.

Don't miss this chance to make a professional connection, build your resume, and learn from a master!
