Rick Merrill began dancing at Dartmouth College with the group that was to become Pilobolus Dance Theater. He studied with Barbara Dilley, Steve Paxton, Merridith Monk and others at Naropa Institute in the 1970’s. In New York City Rick was fortunate to study with many illustrious teachers and artists including Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor, The Jose Limon Company, Trisha Brown, Larry Rhodes, Marjorie Mussman, and Alfredo Corvino. He performed with Rosalind Newman and Dancers, The Men Dancers Project, Martha Clarke among others. Rick choreographed and performed with his own group, Rick Merrill and Friends, in New York and in residencies elsewhere in the US. In 1991 he moved to Barcelona Spain, teaching, choreographing and performing throughout Europe until 2006 when he came to Western Washington University to join the Theatre and Dance Department. Rick teaches contemporary dance technique, improvisation, partnering, choreography and performance.
