Jazz Prof. Kevin Woods drops new album with Trio Linguae

Though colleagues for many years in different configurations, trumpeter Kevin Woods, guitarist John Stowell and pianist Miles Black found inspiration in collaborating as Trio Linguae (Lin-gwee) through their collective sense of conversational, contrapuntal improvising and reflexive listening - harkening the spirit of duo and trio albums by Bill Evans, Jim Hall or Kenny Wheeler.

Outstanding Graduate in Music: Sarah Yates

Sarah Yates will graduate from Western with a Bachelor of Music degree in History & Literature and a minor in Jazz Studies. Originally planning to study public history and early music, she decided to focus on jazz after becoming fascinated with the work of Django Reinhardt. Some of her mentors along this journey include Michael-Paul Gurulé, Dr. Melanie Sehman, Kevin Woods, Dr. Bertil van Boer, Greg Feingold, Lache Cercel, and Dr. Anna Booker.

Alumna Natalie Wilson (Music Education, '84) inducted into Hall of Fame

In 2018, Natalie Wilson (Music Education, '84) received the “Tenuto Award” from the Friends of Frank DeMiero Jazz Festival, and she was named the Regional Outstanding Music Educator in 2012 and 2014. In 2013, the Camas School District named her “Employee of the Year.”

And, most recently, Wilson learned she will soon be inducted into the Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) “Hall of Fame.”

Music Department ensembles open to all students

Western Washington University Department of Music holds ensemble auditions each fall for all the major instrumental and vocal ensembles. The auditions are open to all Western students with an interest in performing music while attending, regardless of major or minor.

Ensemble auditionees prepare music from a list, based on the instrument played, or vocal type. Ensembles include Wind Symphony, Orchestra, Choirs, Symphonic Band, and other.
