Dean's Scholarships

Dean's scholarships are open to returning undergraduate students pursuing one of the College of Fine and Performing Arts degrees:

  • Art
  • Art History
  • Dance
  • Design
  • Music
  • Theatre

Required Application Materials

Your application must include these two items:

Application letter

No more than one, single-sided page (8 ½ “x 11” sheet). Take the time to proof-read your letter for spelling and grammar errors.  Present yourself well and be sure to include all of these items:

  • Your name and W# at the top
  • Please include information about your passion for your discipline
    • how/why you chose it, became interested in it, etc.
    • your involvement in your discipline outside the classroom
    • other information, which might be of interest to the scholarship committee

If you are applying for the Oscar Edwin Olson or Aftermath Club scholarships:

  • Include information specific criteria in your application letter
  • Select the appropriate box(es) on the application form

Aftermath Club Scholarship

In your letter, address how you meet all of these criteria. Include your major and professional goals.

  1. Must be a student in the fine and performing arts whose work shows promise of a professional career; OR a student majoring in education who plans to teach one of the disciplines in fine or performing arts

  2. Have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA

  3. Be a resident of Whatcom County

  4. Be a graduate of a Whatcom County high school (state in your letter which school)

  5. Be a continuing or returning student at Western

Oscar Edwin Olson Arts Scholarship

You must have a current FAFSA on file to be eligible for the Oscar Edwin Olson Arts Scholarship.

Address in your letter how you meet all of these criteria.

  1. Recipients must be a declared College of Fine and Performing Arts major. Talk about your major in your letter.

  2. Students must be children of single, divorced, or widowed parents. These guidelines include adoptive parent(s) as well as biological parent(s). Briefly describe your situation in your application letter. Eligible students include those who at any time in their first eighteen years:

    1. Lived with one unmarried parent, or
    2. Had divorced parents, or
    3. Had one or more deceased parents.
  3. Students must be eligible for at least one dollar of financial aid.

Awards

Scholarship awardees will be notified in early May.

If you are awarded a scholarship

A thank you letter is required

Address the letter to the scholarship donor.

Disbursement of scholarship award is contingent upon receipt of a thank you letter. This letter must be one single-sided page (8 ½ “x 11” sheet), single spaced, with a handwritten signature.

More information on thank you letters will be provided with the award notification, including the letter's deadline.

Award disbursement

Scholarships are disbursed in equal amounts during the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters.

You must notify the Dean’s office in writing (email is accepted) if you will not be attending all 3 terms. Notification must be received prior to 4:30 PM PDT on the last Friday of May following your application to prevent loss of all or part of your scholarship award.
