Shaping a Journey: Prior, Current, & Beyond

Tying together both education and performance, Lucas will present multiple collaborative, innovative, and challenging works for solo percussion and more, featuring 2 world premiere pieces and 12 collaborators. Intertwined will be audio files featuring elements of his developing educational philosophy, including his personal & cultural socialization, competing teacher chronologies, and social-emotional relationships that have shaped his journey through life.

Korean American Lucas Webster is a senior at Western Washington University pursuing dual Bachelor of Music degrees in Music Education and Music Performance, studying percussion with Patrick Roulet, and Music Education with Patricia Bourne, and Paul Bain.

Originally a Tubist and Trombonist, Lucas began playing percussion at the request of his high school music directors and began studying percussion formally as a first-year student at Western during the fall of 2020.

Active in the music department at Western, Lucas performs as a member, student conductor, and featured soloist with the Symphony Orchestra, New Music Ensemble, Western Choirs, and WWU Percussion Ensemble. He has served as the principal percussionist in the Western Wind Symphony since 2022.

Lucas was named winner of the Western Concerto Competition in 2024 for the second time having won previously in 2022. Outside of Western, he performs as a regular member of the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra and frequently is asked to perform with the NITE Theatre, TAG Theatre, Skagit Symphony, and Whatcom Wind Ensemble where he was also invited to guest conduct. He has taken part in the Bellingham Music Club Virginia Glover Competition, receiving the Randy Sasnett Prize and 2nd place in 2023 & 2024 respectively.

Lucas' honors and awards include the Peter Botting Scholarship, Lloyd Walworth Music Endowment, Albert Shaw Scholarship, Terry Clark Music Scholarship, Patricia Day Music Scholarship, and the Don C. Walter Memorial Scholarship.

Upon completion of his academic studies and student teaching, Lucas looks forward to teaching instrumental music in the public schools and eventually pursuing graduate studies in instrumental conducting and music education.
