Dance Scholarships

First Year Dance Scholarships

Two $1000.00 merit scholarships will be awarded to first year Dance majors who demonstrate excellence in the major's courses, commitment to a career in the dance field, and demonstrated engagement with the Dance program (participating in social events, performances, workshops, assisting with program needs, etc.).

To apply

  1. submit a 2-3 page essay that describes:

    • How you envision yourself contributing to the field of dance after graduation (as educator, performer, writer, production staff, arts administration, etc.)
    • How your work thus far in the Dance major at Western supports your goals.
  2. Attach a copy of your Academic History (must include current grade point average) and examples of excellence in Dance major courses and engagement within the Dance program.
  3. Include a link to an online video (1-2 minutes in length) of you performing a solo that you choreographed. Any style of dance, can be formal or informal setting, must be filmed/performed in 2023-2024.

Deadline

The deadline to apply for the First Year Dance Scholarship is February 9, 2024 by 5 p.m.

Selection Rubric for New Student Scholarship

  • Excellence in majors courses (demonstrated skill as mover/thinker/writer, open to feedback, full class participation), 2 points each, total of 6 points
  • Commitment to career in dance (long term planning, enthusiasm for pursuing dance as career) scale of 1-2 points
  • Engagement at wwu dance (participation in shows as applicable, examples of initiative and leadership) 2 points each, total of 4 points
  • Quality of essay (a well organized essay, with in-depth reflection and answers to the prompts) 1 point each, total of 2 points

14 points possible ranked by faculty.

Apply for the First Year Dance Major Scholarship

Monica Gutchow Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Monica Gutchow, a former WWU Dance faculty member. Two to three scholarships will be awarded to upper-division Dance students who have demonstrated exceptional merit, good academic standing, financial need and an interest in teaching dance at the college level. Scholarship amount: up to $9000, in increments of at least $1000. (Amount depends on number of qualified applicants and endowment balance).

Award amount: $1000.00

Tabetha Fox Clark Memorial Dance Scholarship

This endowment was created in memory of Tabetha Fox Clark to provide scholarships to deserving students in the College of Fine and Performing Arts Theatre and Dance Department for students studying Dance. Whenever possible, preference will be made to applicants who demonstrate an interest in Dance Education.
