CFPA Diversity Equity Inclusion Committee Mission Statement

Mission

This Mission Statement is a changing and growing document. It will continue to be updated as the CFPA Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee learns and improves upon best practices with work in Social Justice and Equity.

The College of Fine and Performing Arts seeks to abolish past or current values and practices rooted in systemic oppression and racism. We recognize the damage and harm these systems have inflicted on our students, staff, faculty, and broader community. We are on an unending journey to examine and change these values and practices for the better. To ensure ongoing sustainability, the college has created this rotating cohort of students, faculty, and staff who are dedicated in good faith to guide the CFPA into a future more equitable for our community. This committee has been entrusted by the Dean to assist with discovering and implementing a roadmap of cohesive actions to support a culture of inclusion. This committee is committed to:

  • Identifying patterns discrimination and oppression on the basis of race, ethnicity, color, national origin, age, citizenship or immigration status, pregnancy, use of protective leave, genetic status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, creed, religion, veteran or military status, disability or the use of a trained guide dog or service animal by a person with a disability, any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law, and that which negatively affects the CFPA community.
  • Developing and/or identifying programs that help educate our community in accessibility, diversity, equity and inclusion (ADEI) issues to further a transformed culture of support, acceptance, and celebration that serves a diverse student body in achieving their educational and life goals.
  • Listening to and caring for those affected by inequity, providing a platform of trust, action, and empowerment.
  • Helping the CFPA community transform systems dominated by voices of privilege, in favor of meaningful approaches that include, amplify, and celebrate a range of perspectives representative of our broader community, nation, and world.
  • Researching and supporting actions that can be taken to empower the faculty, staff, and students to help administrators work with the United Faculty of Western Washington (UFWW), Public School Employees (PSE), Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE), and Professional Staff Organization PSO), and the student body to support a transformative culture that can be enforced by the Administration of the CFPA.

The CFPA respects all communities with which we work and strive for ongoing reflection. Our collective educational endeavor is grounded in openness, experimentation, critical engagement, and creative freedom. We understand that many people associated with our college have been marginalized in the past by our complicit actions within a system built on oppression.  The college understands this, and that we have more to learn, and we are tasked to do better.
