Having held positions at both the high school and middle school level, Zachary Smith brings a wide range of experiences to Western. His positions have included teaching high school and middle school band, percussion, jazz band and marching band. In addition, Zach has held positions with the Ferndale High School Marching Band, The Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps and the North Sound Youth Symphony. Zach is also a conductor, performer and founder of the Whatcom Wind Ensemble in Bellingham.
Zach received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education as well as a Master’s Degree in Conducting from Western Washington University. While at Western, he studied euphonium with Dr. Carla Rutschman and conducting with Dr. Christopher Bianco. In addition to his studies at Western, Zach has also attended workshops lead by Dr. James Smart, Dr. Kevin Sedatole and Dr. Gary Hill.
While working at Western, Zach continues to work with young musicians by teaching the winds and percussion students of the North Sound Youth Symphony and maintaining a brass studio.
