Ivar Sanders, Senior Composition Recital

Ivar Sanders will present a Senior Composition Recital featuring original works composed during their time of study in The Department of Music under the instruction of Dr. Bruce Hamilton, Dr. Lesley Sommer, and Dr. Charles Halka.

Ivar Sanders is a senior at Western Washington University who will be graduating June 2021 with a Bachelor of Music in Composition. Growing up in Sammamish, Washington, he had first started piano lessons at the age of 7 before starting to take trombone lessons at age 10. Now with 12 years of playing, he has been involved in the Wind Symphony and Western Brass Quintet at WWU and performs in local musicals during the summer, such as the Village Theatre in Issaquah and the Redmond Academy of Theatre Arts.

His interest in composition began at the age of 14, and over his time at university he has written a handful of both live instrumental and electroacoustic works. One of his recent works, Strokes of Sand, has been read and recorded by Ensemble Dal Niente, and another previous work, Aleatoric Variations, had been read by Ónix Ensamble (Mexico).

He has also been a recipient of some honors at WWU, including the Ada and Don Walter Endowment Fund, Wilhite Family Music Scholarship, Gregory Cox Music Scholarship, and tied for first place in WWU’s composition competition in 2019. Ivar would like to thank the many music professors who helped support his interests, academic pursuits, and aspirations during his time at WWU.
