Join NowHearThis!, Western Washington University's contemporary music collective, for an evening featuring two landmark works from the past 60 years. George Crumb’s trail-blazing Vox Balaenae (“Voice of the Whale”), for flute, cello, and piano features an astonishing array of innovative performance techniques, including singing, whistling, percussive effects, and the placement of various objects inside the piano. The result is a musical world that is at once alien and profound, and reflects the emergence of the environmental movement in the early 1970s. Terry Riley’s seminal In C of 1964 was the first work to launch American Minimalism into the mainstream. Simple in concept, but deceptively challenging in execution, no two performances are ever alike!
